Background: Our Karridale vineyard has three hills crowned with magnificent stands of fully mature, very tall, 300 year old Marri. In the south west of Western Australia the dominance of Marri has long been recognized as an indicator of deeper, well-drained soils well suited to viticulture. As a bonus the Marri also filters and calms the breeze for the good of the vines and furthermore, provides a prolific display of white blossom in March to feed the Silver Eyes who might otherwise destroy the crop.
Marrimee is a blend, a marrying if you wish, of two main ingredients semillon and chardonnay. The blending ratio varies from year to year but the backbone is semillon.
Because of the way we grow these vines all fruit ripens with a greater degree of exposure to the sun than is usual which reduces the herbaceous element in favour of riper grape characters. The fruit is also picked a little later. The palate shifts away from the green flavour spectrum towards riper flavours where skin tannins play a greater role delivering a pleasant astringency with a spicy lift to the end palate. This is a very deliberate decision to follow a personal flavour preference.
Marrimee is also a marriage of grape and yeast flavour and the special magic that emerges when grape juice is fermented in wooden containers. The following notes relate to the 2003 release.
