This is a very good wine. It has softness, generosity and great length. It is supple and warm, and aromatically intriguing. It is undoubtedly one of the best Shiraz released under the Happs label. It is released impossibly late. In 2009 it is already eight years after vintage date.
Why so late? This wine is a Three Hills Shiraz but early in the life of the label we made more red wine than was proper. This wine was slightly smelly. It had a ferment odour. Today, that aroma has gone. What is left is fruit. You might say, we have done the cellaring for you. But the wine is still young. It will be a life improving beverage for another twenty years. To produce its best in the Margaret River environment Shiraz demands warm summers and time on the vine. This grape vine thrives on harsh treatment, never requiring irrigation. It is no wonder that it has done well in Australia. The virtue of the Karridale environment is that Shiraz ripens a little later and it has time to moderate the herbaceous vegetative notes that one sees in the north of the Margaret River region. We know this having grown Shiraz in Dunsborough for many years.
Shiraz is a vine that produces wine of many styles. Many consumers enjoy the wines of central Victoria where mid palate flavour benefits from cool ripening and limited cropping levels. That is a very different style to that produced in Coonawarra and just as different again from that produced in the Barossa. Rhone Syrah is different from anything produced in Australia. Shiraz from Three Hills is quite singular. It’s rich, black and luxurious in flavour with more of a hint of dark tobacco, mint and eucalypt. It too, stands alone. |
